You might choose bottled water believing it’s the purest hydration option—but groundbreaking research reveals a hidden danger: microplastics. These tiny plastic particles, smaller than a grain of sand, are infiltrating your body with every sip, and their long-term health effects are alarming.
The Shocking Findings
A 2025 study published in Microplastics analysed five Maltese bottled water brands and found:
84% of samples contained microplastics, averaging 35,877 particles per litre—some brands reached 70,457 particles per litre.
Over 95% of particles were smaller than 5 micrometres, meaning they can easily enter the bloodstream and organs.
The primary culprits? Bottle caps (made of polyethylene) and packaging abrasion, along with contaminants from water treatment systems.
How Microplastics Devastate Your Health
Once inside the body, microplastics trigger a cascade of harmful effects:
1. Digestive System Damage
Inflammation & Gut Imbalance: Microplastics physically irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to chronic inflammation and disrupting gut bacteria.
Chemical Toxicity: They absorb toxins like heavy metals and release endocrine-disrupting chemicals (e.g., bisphenol A), increasing risks of metabolic disorders.
2. Respiratory & Lung Harm
Oxidative Stress: Inhaled microplastics lodge in lung tissue, causing inflammation and oxidative damage.
Linked to COPD: Polystyrene microplastics worsen lung cell damage, raising risks of chronic respiratory diseases.
3. Endocrine & Reproductive Risks
Hormone Disruption: Microplastics interfere with hormone production, potentially leading to infertility, developmental disorders, and cancers.
Placental Invasion: A 2021 study found microplastics in human placentas, raising concerns about fatal development.
4. Immune & Nervous System Threats
Chronic Inflammation: Long-term exposure triggers immune dysfunction, linked to autoimmune diseases.
Neurotoxicity: Animal studies show microplastics cross the blood-brain barrier, causing cognitive decline and motor dysfunction.
How to Protect Yourself
Switch to Glass or Stainless Steel: Reusable bottles significantly reduce plastic contamination. If buying bottled water, opt for glass containers.
Filter Your Water: High-quality home filters (like Other Water reverse osmosis) can remove microplastics from tap water.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just a Maltese issue—microplastics have been found in bottled water worldwide. Until stricter regulations exist, proactive choices are your best defence.
